Polarization mode dispersion of spun fibers with randomly varying birefringence.
We show analytically how periodic spinning affects the polarization mode dispersion of a fiber in three different practical regimes that are determined by the values of three length scales: the beat length, the birefringence correlation length, and the spin period. We determine in which limits the spin is effective in reducing the mean differential group delay.
متن کاملPolarization control in spun and telecommunication optical fibers.
We consider the counterpropagating interaction of a signal and a pump beam in a spun fiber and in a randomly birefringent fiber, the latter being relevant to optical telecommunication systems. On the basis of a geometrical analysis of the Hamiltonian singularities of the system, we provide a complete understanding of the phenomenon of polarization attraction in these two systems, which allows t...
متن کاملCharacterization of spun fibers with millimeter spin periods.
Novel spun fibers with intrinsic asymmetric stress and millimeter spin periods are characterized both experimentally and theoretically. Based on the optical spectra of imprinted Bragg gratings, a new method is proposed to precisely measure their spin periods with a 0.1-mm spatial resolution. Properties of polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) and evolutions of polarization in these spun fibers are...
متن کاملAnalytical Treatment of Randomly Birefringent Periodically Spun Fibers
Spun fibers are increasingly used in telecommunication systems because their polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) is lower than that in unspun fibers. In this paper, we investigate the effects of a periodic spin on the PMD of fibers with randomly varying birefringence. Numerical simulations show that when the spin period is of the same order as or larger than the beat length, the mean differentia...
متن کاملDirectional annealing-induced texture in melt-spun (Sm12Co88)99Nb1 alloy
Developing texture in nanocrystalline permanent magnet alloys is of significant importance. Directional annealing is shown to produce texture in the permanent magnet alloy (Sm12Co88)99Nb1. Melt spinning produced isotropic grain structures of the hard magnetic metastable SmCo7 phase, with grain sizes of ∼300 nm. Conventional annealing of melt-spun (Sm12Co88)99Nb1 alloy produced Sm2Co17 phase wit...
